Trinidad oil company
by Jamaica Observer
Divers searched for the source of an oil spill amid offshore platforms along Trinidad's western coast, the state-owned petroleum company Petrotrin said Sunday.
Fishermen first noticed the spill late Friday, but Petrotrin was not notified until the next day, company spokesman Arnold Corneal said.
Crews dispatched were working Sunday to clean up the spill, which is considered small because it cannot be seen from a helicopter, Corneal said.
The island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean's largest oil and gas producer, exported an average 144,000 barrels of oil a day in 2006, 81 per cent of that to the US, data from the US Energy Information Administration show.
