33-mile gas pipeline for Tobago

A United States company, Technip USA Inc, has been hired to execute phase one of the US$72 million gas pipeline project at Cove, Tobago, which will eventually provide more power for the sister island.
The gas pipeline between Trinidad and Tobago will be used to power the T&TEC generating plant at Cove and will assist in the industrialisation process, provide energy for light industries at Cove, and provide energy for Tobago.
The pipeline will be ten inches in diameter and 33 miles long.
At last Thursday's weekly press briefing in Tobago, Chief Secretary Orville London described the venture as an exciting time for Tobago.
He said the most modern technology will be utilised, not only to bring the pipeline to Tobago but to ensure it was an environmentally sensitive project.
The Tobago House of Assembly was informed of the technique called horizontal directional drilling, which will allow the firm to drill underneath the reefs in Tobago.
This will help in the preservation and protection of the sensitive marine environment just outside Cove, London said.
London said he expected that when the project was completed in the next two years, Tobago would be in a position to have a more reliable supply of power which would fuel more development.
