The banana industry in Suriname is aiming for the number one spot as the region's largest producer.
Manager of the Foundation for Preservation of the Suriname Banana Sector Anand Ramkisoensing, said currently millions of dollars is being invested in the company to guarantee its viability and sustainability.
He further noted that Suriname had to rebuild the sector when the industry collapsed.
Production was abandoned and several thousands workers lost their jobs.
Starting in 2002, the government and the European Union invested millions in a restructuring program which should ultimately result in the privatisation of the sector.
Mr. Ramkisoensing disclosed that while banana production in 2006 was 46,500 tonnes, production in 2007 will increase to 60,000 tonnes,
