Motor-racing-FIA
gives green light to Singapore circuit
Formula One's governing body have given the
thumbs-up for the Singapore street circuit that
will host the city-state's inaugural grand prix
in 2008.
However, organisers said in a statement that
a decision was still pending on whether the
race can be held at night, a first for the glamour
sport.
The
International Automobile Federation (FIA) approval
gives the green light for construction of the
ambitious 5.067-km circuit that will see cars
speeding past skyscrapers, colonial-era buildings
and the waterfront.
Singapore,
which in May won a five-year deal to host Formula
One, is scheduled to put on Asia's first F1
street race on Sept. 28 next year.
"After
months of poring over the drawing board, we
are now one step closer to our dream,"
Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore GP,
said.
"However,
there is no time to celebrate -- it is now full
speed ahead for us to get this race on the road."
