Missionaries doing Martinique
by Salt Lake Tribune
Two missing Mormon missionaries, including one from Utah, have been found alive and well in Martinique.
LDS Church officials say the two, Thomas Levi Swain, a British citizen from Hamilton, New Zealand, and Tyson Delmar Gray from Taylorsville, Utah, were reported missing Monday night after they failed to return from a hike.
Nineteen-year-old Gray, a 2006 Murray High School graduate, had been serving for six months. Swain, 21, had completed 18 months of his mission.
The missionaries had been hiking Mount Pelee -- a popular attraction on the French Caribbean Island -- and became disoriented by dense foliage, LDS church officials said.
They were found by a local farmer Thursday morning. The men are "doing well," according to the church's statement.
Martinique Police Commander Jean Michel Robinet told The Associated Press the men were weak from a lack of food, but otherwise were in good shape and didn't need medical attention at a hospital.
Robinet said the pair heard search helicopters overhead but could not find a clearing to signal to them.
The two plan to continue their missions on the island.
Attempts to reach Gray's family at their Taylorsville home Thursday morning were unsuccessful.
