Port
of Halifax to expand into India
The Port of Halifax is ready to sign a memorandum
of understanding next Wednesday to trade with
Chennai, one of India's largest ports. The ceremony
will be the most tangible step in building a
case for federal Atlantic Gateway funding. It
will take place during an 11-day trade mission
led by Transportation Minister Angus MacIsaac.
"The Port of Chennai agreement is a very
positive step forward," said Gateway initiative
director David Oxner. "In this business,
it's not an overnight thing. The Port (of Halifax)
has been in India for over a year, beating the
bushes."
Chennai,
formerly known as Madras, is India's fourth-largest
city. It has the county's second-busiest container
port and a new terminal is being planned. Its
exports include automotive parts.
