Digicel assists Haiti

by Cay Compass

Digicel has donated US$100,000 in food and household supplies to help scores of Haitians affected during the recent passage of Tropical Storm Noel.

As Tropical Storm Noel was one of the most devastating storms experienced by the country, items such as mattresses, food provisions, rice, peas, sugar and salmon were distributed to the displaced Haitians by Digicel employees and the Haitian Foundation to support the Haitian relief agency FONDHACOT, said a company press release.

Call credit was also given to the relief agency to help keep in touch with agents working in communities most affected.

“On behalf of the FONHDACOT and the hundreds of families who will be assisted, we are grateful for this gesture from Digicel. This aid will give these families a high level of comfort in a distressing time”, said E.

Suzy J, president of FONHDACOT.
According to Digicel Group CEO Colm Delves, “Digicel has a firm commitment to the Haitian people and we stand ready to help our customers in times of need.

Haitians are very resilient people and we are confident that with our help and that of others, the Haitian people will overcome this situation.”

Since launching in Haiti, Digicel has been actively involved in supporting the growth of the nation not least through building a state–of–the–art mobile telecommunications infrastructure and ensuring mobile handsets are accessible to all. After just 17 months since the launch Digicel Haiti has 1.8 million customers.

In that short time the company has also established the Digicel Haiti Foundation, a non–profit organization solely dedicated to helping build strong, sustainable communities and fostering economic growth across Haiti. With a firm focus on education, the Digicel Haiti Foundation made an initial commitment of rebuilding 20 primary schools in its first year, two in each district of Haiti.

Similarly, The Digicel Foundation in Jamaica, donated J$20 million (US$285,000) for the repair of schools damaged during Hurricane Dean, which wreaked havoc in Jamaica in August. The funds will go towards the repair of 12 schools in St. Thomas, Manchester and St. Catherine.

The Digicel Foundation in Jamaica was established in 2004 and to date has allocated US$7 million in sustainable community development projects.
