Fraudulent Cases Given to Police

By fijivillage.com
The Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority has forwarded some fraudulent tax cases to police to investigate.

The General Manager Inland Revenue Tax, Madhu Sudan said after assessing some forms, they came across about four fraudulent cases where taxpayers have given false information to FIRCA.

He said they will decide on further action after police completes its investigations.

Meanwhile, FIRCA is giving a tax amnesty period to taxpayers who have not paid taxes over the past years.

Sudan said many taxes have not been paid from 1985 and many of these include business houses. He said many business houses have complained to FIRCA that they are facing financial hardships and do not make any profit which makes it hard for them to lodge returns which is why the Amnesty period has been given.

Madhu Sudan said they hope to collect more than $30 million in taxes during the Amnesty period. More than $168 million in taxes have not been paid to FIRCA yet.

The tax amnesty period started last Monday and will end on November 16th.
