Travel
scene -- Touring China the trip of a lifetime
What happened to all of the
Maoist uniforms? Where did all of the cars come
from? Did the bicycles disappear? And what about
all of the high-rise, hotel and highway construction?
Only a handful of our contingent of 87 persons
had been to China before. But for all of our group
-- on August's Post-Bulletin-sponsored tour of
the world's most dramatically changing country
-- it was an eye-opening experience.
Simply overwhelming is perhaps the best way to
describe the "new" China as compared
to conditions there just 20 or less years ago.No
question that the most visible changes have occurred
in Beijing, partly since that city will host the
2008 Olympics next summer and the Chinese are
intent on putting their best foot forward in the
eyes of the world."A few years ago when I
visited," observed Plainview retiree Al Schroeder,
"I almost got run over by a bicycle; now
you hardly see a bike on the street; but the cars
-- watch out."
