Persistence
takes siblings to China, Special Olympics
Even though it was more than 30 years ago, Stacy
Perry still remembers her reaction when her
younger brother brought home a gold medal from
the Special Olympics.
"I got on my bike, put the medal around
my neck and pedaled around to everyone and said,
'Look at this. My brother won a gold medal,'
" recalls Perry, who was 9 at the time.
Todd
Ornstein, 42, remembers that day when at 7 he
won the 50-yard dash. "When she told me
that she did that, I was cracking up,"
he laughs. "I said, 'Stacy, I love you,
dear.' "
As
children, the siblings formed a strong bond
that has led them to China this week. They will
be among 7,500 athletes representing 160 countries
at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games,
which will be held Tuesday through Oct. 11 in
Shanghai. The Special Olympics is a competition
for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
