Cayman Islands in the Foreign
by Cayman Net News
There is something peculiarly cruel about the way the British government’s legal juggernaut has set off once more to crush the hopes of the Chagossians who have already won a series of victories in the courts allowing them the right of return to the islands of Chagos archipelago which were illegally detached from the colony of Mauritius three years before its independence in 1968 and now form part of the British Indian Ocean Territory.
No sooner do the Chagossians achieve victory in one legal case, than the government appeals and the heavy, legal machinery once again clunks into gear. And this time the reason, as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokespeople are very keen to explain to anyone prepared to listen, is that there is an urgent need to define the defence status of all British overseas territories including Bermuda, Gibraltar and the Cayman Islands.
Stingray City more like a Disney theme park in high summer
LONDON, England: Daily Telegraph, November 20, 2007 – It’s an unfortunate fact but the popular stops on Europe’s cruise trail have become nightmare destinations – both for the locals, unless they live on tourists, and the hapless cruise passengers who suddenly find themselves in a maelstrom of humanity.
It’s not a problem exclusive to Europe. I have visited Grand Cayman (population 49,500) in the Caribbean when four ships, each with more than 2,000 passengers on board – mine had 4,000 – descended at once one morning. The main tourist attraction, Stingray City, where you can walk in the water with these Frisbee-like fish, was more like a Disney theme park in high summer.
Penang should become an offshore centre like the Cayman Islands
PENANG, Malaysia: Malaysia Star, November 20, 2007 – The Federal Government should explore transforming Penang into an offshore financial centre as part of the state’s intellectual infrastructure development, said Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (Penang) chairman Datuk Jerry Chan Fook Sing.
“By turning Penang into an offshore financial centre, the Government can also attract a lot of the financial talents who are now overseas to come back. The British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas are examples of successful offshore financial centres,” he said.
