Korean tourists injured in North
A bridge has collapsed
at a scenic mountain resort in N. Korea, injuring
20 S. Korean tourists, the South Korean tour
operator said.
Lee Jae-hee a spokesman for Hyundai Asan Corp.,
the tour operator said that the accident occurred
near the Guryong (Nine Dragons) Falls in Mount
Geumgang on the east coast, when an iron wire
supporting the 20-meter-long bridge ruptured
at the scenic Diamond Mountain resort, with
20 South Koreans falling seven meters to the
ground below.
Among the 20, six seriously injured were being
transferred to South Korea for treatment, while
the others who suffered mild injuries were
being treated in North Korea, Lee said. He
also added that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Some 300,000 South Koreans travel to the North
Korean mountain resort annually. This is the
first major accident to occur at the resort
area since the South Korean company launched
the tour program in late 1998.
