Favorable tourism trends for Greece
Athens- Greece experienced a 6% rate of increase in tourist arrivals between 2005 and 2007. According to figures from the Institute of Tourism Research and Forecast, the figure becomes 6,5% if land and sea arrivals are included.
Airport arrivals, which are the main source of data, increased by 4,3% compared to 3,4% in July 2007. While arrivals before the Olympic Games were in decline, Athens arrivals today represent 50% of all arrivals in the country.
According to Kathimerini newspaper, one issue that the institute is examining is a dovetail effect between arrivals in Athens and the rest of the country, as well as a decline in interest for time-honored tourist destinations such as the Dodecanese, Crete and the Ionian islands.
A further issue is the decline in income from foreign currency exchange, despite the favorable arrival percentages.
